Engineering drawings or technical reports
Evidence of significant industrial projects

Documentation of leadership on important engineering projects
For engineers working primarily in industry, publications are not necessarily the only way to demonstrate impact. Evidence that an applicant developed a process that improved production, reduced downtime, increased safety, or solved an important technical problem may be highly relevant.

Customers or industry partners who have used the applicant's technology
Independent experts familiar with the applicant's contributions
A good recommendation letter should do more than say that the applicant is an excellent engineer.
For example, a plant manager who can explain how an applicant redesigned a production system that substantially reduced downtime may provide compelling evidence of real-world impact. Similarly, an independent engineering expert might explain why the applicant's technology addresses a significant problem throughout an industry.
Mechanical Engineering and the National Interest
Mechanical engineering frequently intersects with broader U.S. priorities, particularly in areas such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, energy efficiency, transportation, and automation.
An engineer developing technologies that improve domestic manufacturing productivity, for example, may be able to connect that work to broader concerns about U.S. industrial competitiveness and supply-chain resilience. An aerospace engineer may have a very different national-interest argument involving aviation technology, defense, or space systems.
But the importance of the industry alone is not enough.
A strong NIW petition connects a broader national need to the applicant's specific proposed endeavor and then demonstrates why that individual is well-positioned to advance it.
