  • Improving electrical systems for advanced manufacturing

  • Developing electrical systems for data centers or high-performance computing

  • Improving industrial automation and control systems

  • Developing sensors, embedded systems, or other advanced electronics

The key is to move beyond a general occupation and identify a specific engineering problem the applicant intends to address.

What Evidence Can Help an Electrical Engineer's NIW Case?

Useful evidence will depend on the engineer's particular endeavor, but it might include:

  • Professional licenses or specialized certifications

  • Technical reports or engineering studies

  • Evidence of significant projects

Government and industry reports can also be helpful in demonstrating why the underlying problem matters nationally.

For example, an engineer working on grid modernization might use evidence concerning U.S. needs for greater electric reliability, resilience, cybersecurity, and transmission capacity. An engineer working in power electronics might instead focus on how the technology affects advanced manufacturing, grid systems, or other critical applications.

Who Might Be a Good Recommender?

Potential recommenders could include:

  • Senior electrical engineers

  • Engineering professors or researchers

  • Technical directors

  • Utility or power-system professionals

  • Semiconductor industry experts

  • Project managers familiar with significant engineering work

  • Independent experts familiar with the applicant's technology or contributions

As with other NIW cases, the most famous recommender is not necessarily the best one.

A strong recommender should be able to explain what the applicant actually did and why it was important. For example, an expert who can explain how an engineer's design improved the reliability of a power system provides much more useful evidence than someone who simply describes the applicant as talented or hardworking.

Electrical Engineering and the National Interest

Electrical engineering can intersect directly with major U.S. needs.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes a reliable, resilient, and secure electric grid as vital to national and economic security. Federal initiatives also emphasize grid modernization, cybersecurity, power electronics, energy storage, and advanced control technologies.

But those national priorities do not automatically make every electrical engineer eligible for an NIW.

A successful petition should connect the larger national need to the specific work the applicant proposes to perform and then demonstrate why that particular engineer is well-positioned to advance it.

For the right electrical engineer, that combination of specialized expertise, demonstrated accomplishments, and a nationally important proposed endeavor can form the basis of a compelling EB-2 NIW petition.
